Really not funny. I have a precious, beautiful son with Down syndrome, and every time you say “I’m such a retard,” I hear: “I’m such a Matthew.” If you think it’s funny to humiliate and belittle a group of people who not only can’t help their condition, but can’t stand up for themselves, you have a lot to learn. You wouldn’t use the word “fag” or “nigger,” because the groups those words refer to have told us that they find them highly offensive. Well, “retard” is highly offensive and hurtful. I dread the day I have to explain to my crying and heartbroken son what “retard” means. It saddens me that he is growing up in a world that still thinks it is ok to use that word.

  12. rachella says:

Amy, sorry to hear that but you really need to get a sense of humour. It’s sad that you can’t take a joke. You shouldn’t be saddened about the fact that people still use the word ‘retard’, you should be saddened that we have been so entrapped by overly-politcally-correct people like you that carry on about nothing that our right to freedom of speech as been pratically erraditcated.

  13. Pete the Pirate says:

    Amy,
I am sorry you think your son is a retard. Most people with special needs kids see them for what they are…different but of no less value than anyone else in society. Perhaps the problem here is your view on people who are different?

As to the picture…funny as hell.

  14. Melissa says:

I’m sorry that you feel that way. I have a son with special needs, who is 9, and nobody has ever called him a retard, and they treat him with respect. I think people, for the most part, would never call someone who truly has special needs a “retard.” When I see this picture, I think of my crazy brother(who has no special needs). Your son is special… I think you need to not associate that word with your son at all! I know doctors use terms like “mentally retarded, but retarded just means slow. Actually, my friends call me a retard in an endearing way. I think children like our son’s are a gift from God… they are special, and actually have a lot of qualities I wish I could have!!

We’re not picking on your baby… the picture is funny:)

Remember to laugh at yourself, and teach your son it’s okay yo laugh at himself, too.
